Be a Professor at the right institution and you can have exactly this life. I got rich to drive a VW Jetti TDI. My wife, also a professor, gets the second hand Mercedes (at two fifths the cost of a new one). We work hard, but we have autonomy, and time. I have to stop myself thinking about the trade offs I made compared to my financially wealthy friends; but we are by no means poor. Perhaps it’s about that happy intersection of good (but not amazing) money, job autonomy, and deep career satisfaction. I’m privileged and I’m blessed, and I only want to be humble about it.
